Anti-Bullying & Harassment

Employees in every industry have the right to feel safe at work. Everyone in the workplace has a role to play when it comes to preventing and addressing bullying and harassment.

What is Bullying & Harassment?

According to WorkSafeBC, bullying and harassment in the workplace includes “verbal aggression, personal attacks and other intimating or humiliating behaviours.” A worker is being bullied and harassed when “someone takes an action that he or she knew or reasonably out to have known would cause that worker to be humiliated or intimidated”.

Forms of bullying and harassment in the workplace can include insults, harmful hazing, calling someone derogatory names, vandalizing personal belongings and spreading malicious rumours.

Employers in BC are required to have policies and training in place to prevent the likelihood of bullying and harassment occurring in the workplace.

Effects of Bullying & Harassment in the Workplace?

Employees that are victims of bullying and harassment are at risk for high blood pressure, insomnia, depression and anxiety. Consequently, these effects often translate to absenteeism, reduced productivity in the workplace and even choosing to leave the organization all together.
