A public transit organization contracted Pivot HR Services to deliver corporate training to its manager on effectively leading a unionized workforce. Pivot customized a multi-day management training series that incorporated applicable union legislation. Topics included administering the collective agreement, conducting investigations and discipline procedures, duty to accommodate and managing grievances. Training also focused on promoting positive relationships and respect in the workplace. To ensure high practical application value, Pivot facilitated lively, interactive sessions with simulation exercises to build skills and solidify concepts. The public transit organization managers completed their corporate training prepared to lead productive and respectful workplaces in compliance with governing union legislation.
When a local law firm engaged Pivot HR Services, they were looking for a partner who they could trust with their entire HR function. Not only did the law firm seek to outsource their day-to-day HR activities, such as recruiting and performance management, they also wanted Pivot’s help to overhaul their human resources operations from the top down as they prepared to grow. They had a problem that needed our expertise to solve: a nearly 100% turnover rate in their Administrative department that was costing them thousands of dollars. Pivot formulated an HR strategic plan to streamline efficiencies and build capacity. Action steps included enacting a policy manual that standardizes employment practices; onboarding an HR Information System to efficiently track employee data and the recruiting process; introducing an incentive pay system that increases productivity and morale. Pivot was able to successfully turn around the law firm’s retention problem, save the firm money, and prepare for future growth as the firm continues to expand.

We are aware that not all workplaces can invest in multi-day or even day-long programs, so we provide abbreviated versions of almost any HR topic in our popular Lunch and Learn format. We also find that Lunch and Learns tend to be more casual than other more formal training sessions - after all, it’s “just lunch”. This relaxed atmosphere can create a comfortable learning environment which helps employees digest difficult subject matter, such as we observed at our recent Anti-Bullying and Harassment session at the local law firm. Held in their staff lunch room, we presented the essentials of this critical issue that impacts so many workplaces, from applicable legislation to reporting procedures and proactive measures. Employees were encouraged to ask questions which lead to a meaningful discussion around the kitchen table. Their understanding was increased and their minds were nourished, along with their appetites.
