Training Employees During a Time of Uncertainty

As uncertainty looms around the world, both employers and employees remain on edge as they wonder what will happen next and how they can cope during these uncertain times. However, as the employer, you have the critical role to lead your staff and provide the necessary support and training.

Here are four simple steps to take as you continue training employees:

Make self-care a priority

It is said that an empty well cannot provide water. Therefore, before you (the employer), can assist or reassure your staff, you must first reassure and care for yourself. You must develop the mindset needed to move forward regardless of what is happening around you. You can achieve this by focusing on the things that are positive and acting on the things that you are able to control and manage. This will also put you in a better frame of mind to make balanced and unbiased decisions.

Be transparent

Honesty is always the best policy. Regardless of how uncomfortable it may be to speak about your company’s current position and its possible future, transparency is key. It makes no sense to avoid addressing the ‘elephant in the room’. Your employees are already in a state of limbo, uncertainty, and possible panic and you being silent will only create more doubt in their minds. You should seek to provide them with enough information that will eliminate their speculations and clarify misconceptions. However, try to avoid any details that could fuel further panic.

Be compassionate

Everyone wants to feel that they are important and valuable, including your employees. Compassion towards your employees will create a sense of trust and confidence in you and what you say. You should acknowledge their feelings and see how you can address any of their needs. Giving your staff the option of flexibility will also help ease their fears and provide the freedom necessary to work productively. Encouraging staff to be compassionate towards each other will further create an atmosphere of trust and allow individuals to express their feelings and concerns openly and freely.

Be a model

As a leader, it is important for you to remain consistent and practice what you preach. In these uncertain times, the last thing your employees want is an uncertain leader. Your consistency will, in turn, encourage your employees to continue being consistent on the job.
